Sport Can... Conference: A Review

The Donegal Sports Partnership's 'Sport Can...' Conference on Saturday in Letterkenny showed just how important sport is in local society. The theme of the conference centred around the value of sport through promoting inclusion, embracing diversity and facilitating cross border and cross community engagement. Former World Champion Barry McGuigan was the keynote speaker. He shared some of his experiences having boxed professionally at the height of the troubles. Other key speakers included Jason Black, the first Donegal man to climb Everest, Ciaran Ward, Irish Head Judo coach at London 2012 Olympics and Dr. Fergus Heffernen, Neuro- Psychologist. Steven Lytham and Graeme Foreman also delivered workshops on Positive Coaching Scotland and fundamentals of movement for children.
The initiative was supported by by Donegal Peace III Partnership, North West Peace III Cluster and the International Fund for Ireland. The conference was a celebration event of the work done throughout the north-west in terms of using sport as a vehicle to deliver peace and reconciliation impacts.
